Mike Vanstone

Master Mariner

Mike is a Master Mariner with 45 years combined experience at sea and ashore, including command of a variety of offshore vessel types including DP3 offshore diving support vessels with twin bell systems. He was a Senior Marine Superintendent of a fleet of 30 offshore vessels including DSV, survey, supply, well servicing, heavy lift, cable installation and repair.

Formerly vessel specialist and then Head of Offshore Logistics and Marine Operations (Europe) with Vattenfall Offshore wind, he held responsibility for all marine operations and offshore logistics across the Company’s windfarm portfolio. This included wind farm lifecycle planning, design, ports & facilities, construction, installation, commissioning, cable installation, lifetime operations & maintenance and final decommissioning.  His role also included wind farm CTV vessel development and new builds.

Previously the appointed Marine specialist for RasGas, Qatar, Mike was responsible for marine operations within port & offshore gas fields for all offshore supply, specialist vessels including, saturation dive, ROV, well service, drill rigs and jack ups.

Mike has five years’ experience with British Telecom (marine division) as cable officer and offshore deck superintendent involved in international cable laying, cable repair, plough, and trench / jetting burial operations.

As marine warranty surveyor in oil & gas he has completed load outs, load ins, heavy lifts, float overs and offshore installations both topsides, subsea infrastructure for various, pipelines and flexi pipelines  for International projects. Mike has carried out heavy lift, barge surveys and reviewed procedures for these. Experience of carrying out inspections and suitability surveys of offshore vessels including jack ups, HLVs, crane barges, FSOs and FPSO, as well as verification of tugs and tows, towing equipment plans for tows & rig moves

As marine warranty surveyor within offshore windMike has approved load outs and offshore installations for various offshore wind farm projects worldwide, this includes experience with ocean going heavy lift transportation and European inland waterway transport barges. He has been marine warranty surveyor on site for wind farm construction activities for both topside and subsea infrastructure including transformer stations, power cables and cable export lines. Inspections of jack up vessels and rigs including jack up trials, DP trials and up to 8-point mooring verifications.

He has provided technical advice for maritime operations and offshore construction projects to London legal companies, professional associations and Lloyds underwriting companies. Provision of marine advice to P&I clubs after investigation of notified incidents and accidents as to causation and provision of advice to council regarding relevant maritime rules and regulations.

Mike was also a consultant within the DP operations department of an international consultancy, with responsibility for offshore vessel DP installations, DP reviews, DP trials and audits up to DP class 3 vessels.
