Allan is a Naval Architect and Chartered Engineer with over 25 years’ experience in the marine industry, and is a member of the Lloyd’s panel of Special Casualty Representatives (SCR).

Allan has responsibility for the technical standards of Waves Group Naval Architecture services in the marine and casualty sector. He has extensive experience of marine casualties and has been involved in numerous salvage and wreck removal projects. He regularly attends on site on behalf of Clients acting as Client Representative, SCR or as a salvage Naval Architect to manage incidents and ensure a successful outcome.

With a strong background and extensive knowledge in the analysis and investigation of Naval Architecture matters in marine casualties, he provides expert assistance to clients, including Government Bodies, Vessel Owners, P&I Insurers, Hull & Machinery Insurers, Charterers, Cargo Owners / Insurers, Law Firms and Salvage Contractors.

Regularly preparing expert reports for court and arbitrations, he has acted as a Court appointed expert in the Dutch civil court and has given written and oral expert evidence in a UK Fatal Accident Inquiry. Opinion work includes salvage dangers, structural failures, intact and damage stability, flooding, sinking, collisions, project cargo and securing analyses.

Allan is skilled in the use of specialist engineering and Naval Architecture software for analysis, verification, and investigation of a diverse range of vessel types such as container vessels, vehicle carriers, bulk carriers, tankers, cruise vessels, passenger ro-ro ferries, heavy lift vessels, general cargo, cable layers, dredgers, jack-up drilling units, semi-submersible drilling rigs, super yachts, fishing vessels, tugs and barges.

He also has experience of dynamic motion analysis of damaged and flooding vessels, and the appraisal of stability documentation submitted for all ship types under the UK flag. He has performed and attended inclining tests, lightweight surveys, draft surveys, and ship model testing for damage survivability.

As a Marine Warranty Surveyor for offshore renewable energy projects, he has attended load-out, transportation and installation of foundation jackets for wind turbine generators, offshore sub-station topsides units, and attended subsea cable installation operations.
