Waves Group Supports WISTA UK at IMO Summer Reception
Last week, members of the Waves Group team were delighted to attend the WISTA UK Summer Reception, held at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London.
Set against the backdrop of the River Thames on a sunny summer evening, the event brought together a diverse and dynamic cross-section of the maritime industry – from seasoned professionals and senior leaders to those just starting out in their careers. Organised by WISTA UK, the reception offered a warm and welcoming space for networking, shared ideas, and continued conversations around diversity, inclusion, and leadership in maritime.
As a specialist marine consultancy and engineering firm, Waves Group recognises that gender imbalance remains a persistent challenge in our sector. Many of our technical roles are still filled by white, middle-aged men – a reflection of the wider industry and the ongoing shortage of female engineers. That said, we are committed to playing our part in driving change.
Support for organisations like WISTA UK is one way we are actively working to promote and encourage greater representation. These events not only provide a platform to celebrate the progress being made but also create meaningful opportunities for team members to connect with others, broaden their networks, and be inspired by the journeys of those leading the way.
For example, Lydia, our current intern studying Oceanography, is using her time with Waves Group to explore environmental pathways in the marine sector, while Catherine, a former Royal Navy Marine Engineer, is now building her professional network in the marine renewable energy and alternative fuels space. The WISTA UK Summer Reception offered both an invaluable opportunity to meet established and emerging industry leaders, and a reminder of how vital it is to keep inclusion and representation at the forefront of our collective future.
We’re proud to stand alongside WISTA UK in supporting and championing diversity across the maritime industry.
