Waves Group Joins Brodies, DNV and WISTA UK to Discuss the Energy Transition in the North Sea

The move toward alternative fuels is bringing both opportunity and complexity, especially in the North Sea, where operational demands and regulatory expectations continue to grow.

This week in Aberdeen, Lisa Smiley, Marine Consultant & Associate Director at Waves Group, joined a panel event jointly hosted by Brodies LLP, DNV, and WISTA UK to discuss how the industry can adapt to these changes with confidence.

With more than 30 years of marine sector experience, including a decade at sea across offshore oil, gas and renewables, Lisa shared practical insights into how companies can balance innovation with safety and operational certainty.

Other speakers included Maggie McGinlay, Chief Executive, ETZ Ltd; Scott Jervis, Regional Offshore Manager, DNV West Europe; and Niall McLean, Partner, Brodies LLP. Together they explored infrastructure development, evolving safety challenges, and the collaborative steps needed to support a safe and effective energy transition.

“The shift to alternative fuels isn’t just about technology – it’s about people, systems and shared understanding,” said Lisa. “By working together across sectors, we can build the confidence and consistency needed to make progress.”

Waves Group would like to thank Brodies for hosting and WISTA UK for organising an excellent event that brought together a wide range of perspectives from across the offshore and energy sectors.
