Navigating the Energy Transition at the SPNL Panel Discussion

Last week, Waves Group’s Dennis Kelly, Chryssie Klavdianos, and Roberto Tuda Ortiz attended a packed panel hosted by the Shipping Professional Network London (SPNL), where industry professionals tackled some of the most pressing questions shaping shipping’s energy transition.

The session came in the wake of the IMO’s decision to delay formal climate action for at least 12 months, sparking candid discussions on what meaningful progress should look like in the meantime

Key Themes and Talking Points

  • UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS): Delegates examined whether biofuel acceptance criteria will align across the UK, EU, and US, a critical issue to prevent route-based fuel switching and ensure a fair global standard.
  • Shore Power Feasibility: While the potential to cut emissions in port is clear, the panel raised questions around cost, carbon intensity, and infrastructure readiness. With only a small percentage of European ports currently electric-ready, and many UK ports situated at the edge of the grid, major investment will be required to make shore power viable.
  • “Well-to-Wake” Energy Impact: The debate explored whether energy sources can truly be called ‘green’ if the upstream generation still relies on fossil fuels. This holistic view of emissions underscores the importance of system-wide transparency and innovation.

Collaboration for Clarity

With multiple regional policies and technical pathways evolving in parallel, the conversation highlighted a key takeaway: the maritime industry must continue collaborating, questioning, and sharing insight to drive the energy transition forward with clarity and confidence.

Waves Group extends its thanks to SPNL and all speakers for an engaging and thought-provoking session that kept the spotlight firmly on progress, partnership, and practical solutions and look forward to future events and collaborations.
